Panel on Diversifying Philanthropy
August is Black Philanthropy Month, a national celebration that’s taken place for over ten years. Last year the Fairfield County’s Community Foundation, Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the Prosperity Foundation, and The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven collaborated to celebrate and inspire donors of color across the state of Connecticut. The panel will discuss what inspired the collaboration, the strengths of their partnership, the preparation, and the results of a dynamic program. The collaborative program highlighted local organizations taking on the critical issues within their communities and compelling others to get involved.
Moderated by Dr. Leon Bailey, Senior Vice President for Human Resources and Organizational Culture at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and featuring panelists: Erica G. Bradley, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Orsella Hughes, The Prosperity Foundation, Chari Chester Anderson, Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and Joseph Collin, Fairfield County's Community Foundation.

Gifts of Complex Assets
Are you leaving money on the table by fundraising only in cash? Non-cash assets represent huge pools of capital in the U.S.: $40.5 trillion of market value in the public stock market and $43.4 trillion in the private residential real estate market, just to name two examples. Although 80% of donors own assets such as stocks, mutual funds, and bonds, only 21% of them have ever given this type of asset to charity. Yet, academic research strongly suggests that a non-cash gift program can boost your fundraising results not only in a single year, but over the long haul. Your charity’s ability to tap into these assets can provide new sources of revenue to your programming, as well as significant tax advantages to the donor. There can be risks to accepting non-cash assets. This program will walk you through a proper due diligence framework – what questions to ask and who can help you get the answers – so that you can solicit gifts from a bigger pie.
